Police Department

Mission

The mission of the Asbury Park Police Department is to preserve public peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest offenders, administer and enforce criminal and traffic laws and ordinances, and through the principles of “community policing”, work with all residents of our city to build strong relationships and address quality of life issues

Duties & Challenges

The Asbury Park Police Department will organize and maximize their resources under a high-energy, results-oriented three-tiered organization:

PATROL UNIT

  • Responds to incoming calls - from standard police-related services to initial response of homicide investigations and emergency assistance calls

  • Arrests individuals for minor and serious offenses and outstanding warrants

  • Manages traffic enforcement and control

  • Assigns officers to walking and bicycle patrols

  • Responds to initial complaints of narcotic drug activity

    INVESTIGATIVE UNIT

    • Conducts investigations concerning adults or juveniles as victims or as the perpetrator

    • Provides School Resource Officers to maintain safety and security of students and staff

    • Further investigates all initial reports filed with the Department

    • Controls crime scene processing and evidence collection

    • Initiates street crime prevention efforts

    • Interacts with and assists outside agencies

    • Conducts narcotics investigations

      ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT

      • Maintains database of crime patterns and conducts crime analyses based on this data

      • Maintains fleet of all department vehicles

      • Manages all incoming property and evidence collection

      • Maintains records and accounts for the Forfeiture/Law Enforcement Trust Fund

      • Conducts Domestic Violence programs

      • Monitors city taxi inspections and licensing

      • Processes alcoholic beverage license applications and investigates thorough background checks

      • Processes firearms applications through background checks

      • Operates Citizens on Patrol Academy by providing training and overseeing operations and activities

        2005 Accomplishments

        • Deputy Chief Mark Kinmon and Inspector Chris Van Buren were sworn in on November 21st as an initiative to place a stronger focus on the police department in order to address all of the needs and concerns of this revitalized city

        • Reorganized the entire police department focusing on personnel allocations to ensure the efficiency of each unit

        • Worked closely with the Prosecutor’s Office

        • Re-established relationships with neighboring communities and police departments

        • Re-established the Police Athletic League Program
