Asbury Park is in the midst of a tremendous redevelopment effort, one that includes all areas of the City. At no time in the City's past has such a coordinated effort to rebuild and revitalize been so actively pursued by the City's administration, residents, merchants and private developers

Recognition of Sound Planning

The City of Asbury Park has been designated an Urban Center by the State Planning Commission in recognition of the City's planning efforts and those efforts' consistency with the State Development and Redevelopment Plan.

The Department's work has also received recognition for its hard work from its pears. Two major planning initiatives the City has undertaken, (1) petitioning and being designated an urban center and (2) the drafting of the Amended Springwood Avenue Redevelopment Plan, have both won Planning Merit Awards from the Monmouth County Planning Board. In addition, the City received an Achievement in Planning Award for the Amended Springwood Avenue Redevelopment Plan from the New Jersey Planning Officials. Both the petition for urban center designation and Springwood Plan were drafted in-house.

Mission

Using smart growth planning principles, the Department of Planning and Redevelopment provides recommendations and assistance to the governing body of the city, land development review bodies, and the public at large in support of appropriate land development and the redevelopment of Asbury Park

Duties & Responsibilities

Administers all planning and zoning activities within the city as prescribed by applicable laws and local ordinances
Prepares and submit grant applications
Drafts land-use ordinances, including amendments, concerning development regulations within the city
Issues zoning permits and certificates of zoning compliance
Processes all applications for development
Assists developers with pending or prospective development applications, and coordinates development applications between the respective Boards and agencies within the city
Maintains copies of the city zoning map, land development regulations, redevelopment plans, master plans and other planning related documents for public inspection and purchase
