Stormwater Management

Stormwater management is the effort aimed at reducing and channeling rainwater runoff or melted snow from urban areas, streets, lawns, and homes to improve water quality. When stormwater is absorbed into the soil, it is filtered and ultimately flows into streams and lakes. However, when heavy rainwater hits, ground saturated by water creates excess moisture that runs across the surface and ends up in storm drains, sewer systems and drainage ditches. This water often carries debris, chemicals, bacteria, eroded soil, and other pollutants. Proper stormwater management can help decrease the risk of flooding and sanitary sewer system overflows, prevent erosion and habitat destruction, and protect water quality.
