A message from Asbury Park Fire Department: Outdoor Grilling Safety

APFD Safety Tips

The Asbury Park Fire Department wants you and your loved ones to enjoy outdoor grilling season safely! Please read these tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Never leave your grill unattended!
  • Position the grill well away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets far away from grills: declare a three-foot "safe zone" around the grill.
  • Keep your grill clean! Periodically remove grease or fat buildup from the grill and in trays below grill.
  • Wear short, close fitting or tightly rolled sleeves when grilling. Loose clothing can catch fire.
  • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and have grill repairs done by a professional.
  • Do not grill on apartment or condo balconies!
  • For charcoal grills: Only use starter fluids designed for charcoal grills and do not add fluid after coals have been lit. Never use gasoline!
  • For gas grills: Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose. Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks.
  • All propane cylinders manufactured after April 2002 must have overfill protection devices (OPD). OPDs shut off the flow off propane before capacity is reached. OPDS are easily identified by their triangle-shaped hand wheel.
  • REMEMBER! Propane and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors. If used indoors, or in enclosed spaces such as tents, there is risk of fire and of exposure to toxic gases and potential asphyxiation.
