[ARCHIVED] Information from the City of Asbury Park’s Transportation Department: Understanding Traffic Calming

Information from the City of Asbury Parks Transportation Department

As speeding continues to be a problem throughout the United States, cities across the country are exploring ways to keep speeds at safe levels for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. In Asbury Park, we are continually researching and implementing Traffic Calming measures to safeguard residents and visitors.

Traffic Calming is defined as the combination of measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior, and improve safety conditions for all roadway users. Strategies implement physical design features, and other measures, that reduce traffic speed and vehicle collisions, and improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Examples include raised intersections, roundabouts, roadway narrowing, and chicanes.

Techniques such as roadway narrowing and curb extensions have been implemented in numerous areas throughout Asbury Park. Moving forward, additional techniques and strategies will be implemented and evaluated for their effectiveness to determine what work best for our City.
