We are deeply saddened by the passing of Lieutenant Governor, Sheila Oliver and offer our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and the people of New Jersey.
Lt. Governor Oliver made history as the first Black woman to serve as Assembly speaker and the first to win a statewide election in New Jersey. She serves as inspiration to young women everywhere and leaves behind a remarkable legacy of public service and advocacy for equity.
As Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, Lt. Governor Oliver was a significant champion of Asbury Park and instrumental in our City meeting the criteria for being released from the State’s Transitional Aid program. Her long-time support was invaluable and highly appreciated, and her effective leadership made the State and Asbury Park a much better place to live.
Lt. Governor Oliver’s commitment to the people of New Jersey, and to the City of Asbury Park, was unparalleled. She will be greatly missed.
