Information from the City of Asbury Park’s Transportation Department: Understanding Roundabouts

Roundabouts are a type of circular intersection, or junction, in which road traffic is permitted to flow in one direction around a central island, and priority is given to traffic already in the junction. Compared to traditional stop signs and traffic signals, roundabouts greatly reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions by reducing traffic speeds and minimizing the possibility of T-bone and head-on collisions.

Roundabouts can be implemented in both urban and rural areas under a wide range of traffic conditions and are an effective option for managing vehicle speeds and calming traffic. In addition to being a safer type of intersection and calming traffic, roundabouts are efficient in keeping traffic moving and can reduce delays and queuing compared to other intersection alternatives like stop signs and traffic signals. Roundabouts can also create a more suitable environment for walking and biking by lowering vehicle speeds and reducing traffic conflicts.
