September is the most active month of hurricane season. As with any weather-related emergency, residents are urged to take steps now to ensure that their homes and families are prepared. Hurricane hazards may come in many forms including lightening, flooding, storm surges, tornadoes and high winds. Some things you can do to prepare:
- Sign up for emergency mobile alerts from the City of Asbury Park. Text 07712 to 888777, or visit nixle.com. Monitor local news and weather reports.
- Review and restock your Emergency Kit supplies (consider items such as non-perishable foods, a manual can opener, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries)
- Make sure everyone is familiar with your family’s Emergency Communication Plan. Learn evacuation routes, determine a place to stay, and pack a ‘go bag’.
- Protect your property by installing sewer backflow valves, anchoring fuel tanks, reviewing insurance policies, and cataloging belongings.
- Collect and safeguard critical financial, medical, educational, and legal documents and records.
