Doing Business in Asbury Park

New Business Checklist

  • Set up a meeting with City Manager Michael Capabianco to talk about locations, the city’s economic incentives, Asbury Park’s Urban Enterprise Zone Program (APUEZ), and city regulations.
  • Once you’ve selected a location, complete a Zoning Compliance Application to determine if your business is a permitted use at that site. Get the application at the Zoning Department in City Hall. The cost to process the application is $20.
  • Apply for state certification in the Urban Enterprise Zone Program. If your property is located in the city’s UEZ zone, it’s a good idea to certify your business as a state designated UEZ business. And even better, there’s no charge. Check out all the economic incentives on this site available to UEZ.
  • Get your Asbury Park mercantile license. Once you have received zoning compliance, complete a mercantile license application. The license must be renewed each year and the annual fee is based on the type of business you plan to operate. You can get your application from Denise Brown in City Hall. The application will contain information regarding inspections that are required before the license is issued. For additional information call 732.502.5730.
  • Consider joining the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is the acting business advocate for businesses in the city. Information can be obtained by calling 732.775.7676 or by going to
  • If you are making any renovations, repairs or upgrades to your building or property, check in with the Asbury Park Construction Department to determine what permits must be secured. Don’t proceed with any construction without first obtaining all required permits. The Construction office can reached Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM by calling 732.502.5722.
